![]() He and I were writing over at Sea Gayle Music, and a girl named Liz O'Sullivan that works over there ran the company for him. During the time that (it was on hold), Brad Paisley heard it at his publishing house. But then before they could get back in the studio and record it, their career kind of imploded, and they went in different directions. ![]() They would be the kind of act, and at that time, they would have gone outside the lines and colored a little bit. Do you know who put it on hold? The Dixie Chicks. The song just kind of laid there for a while, and then we got word one day that it had been put on hold. They weren't! In fact I had to pretty much twist Jon's arm to even get him to come in and cut a demo on it. He said, "Let me throw a line out at you." As you said, he'd been over on a friend's couch and crashed. Jon said, "I love that. ![]() Jon was telling me about some of things he'd been through lately, and then he asked me, "Whatcha got? What are we going to write?" I said, "Well, I've got an idea to write a song called 'Midnight Cigarette.' Can you imagine a cigarette in an ashtray at midnight, and this guy's sitting there in his lonely apartment, and his significant other is gone. I think he was sleeping on a friend's couch, who said one of the lines to him. You wrote (this song) with your buddy Jon Randall, who was going through a rough time, and that's how the song evolved.
